Description
Gwanda State University invites applications from suitably qualified, competent, and experienced individuals for the position of Crop Specialist at the University’s Agro Innovation and Industrial Park. The Agro Innovation and Industrial Park is a strategic platform for teaching, research, innovation, industrialisation, and commercial agricultural production in line with Education 5.0. The successful candidate will contribute to the successful management of the crop production section of the Agro Innovation and Industrial Park
Responsibilities
As a CROP SPECIALIST, you will be

Planning, coordinating, and managing crop production activities at the Agro Innovation and Industrial Park
-
Ensuring that soil and plant sample analysis are undertaken to inform soil improvement
-
Providing technical leadership in crop management practices including land preparation, planting schedules, fertilization, pest and disease control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling
-
Calibrating planters, fertilizer spreaders, boom sprayers and supervising their respective operations in the field
-
Scheduling irrigation and ensuring efficient utilisation of water to meet crop water requirements

Assessing labour requirement and participating in recruiting and training of staff
-
Carry out regularly pests and physiological disorders scouting to recommend corrective actions where necessary

Identifying crop maturity indices and recommending harvesting dates, appropriate harvesting and storage conditions

Maintaining production, crop management practices and financial records
-
Arranging for sales of crops in collaboration with the Business Development Manager Inspecting machinery, equipment and facilities to establish maintenance and repair requirements

Establishing partnerships with industry, seed companies, input suppliers, and research institutions
-
Facilitating farmer training, extension services, and technology transfer to surrounding communities

Promoting innovation and commercialization of crop-based technologies and products
-
Supervising students on industrial attachment, work-related learning, and research projects conducted at the Agro Innovation and Industrial Park

Preparing technical reports, production budgets, and performance evaluations
-
Undertaking any other related duties as assigned by the Director Research, Innovation and Industrialisation

Conduct adaptive research trials on new crop varieties, technonologies, and agronomic practices
-
Collaborate with universities, research institutions, and private sector partners on agricultural innovation projects
Qualification
-
A Master’s Degree in Crop Science/ Agronomy/Plant Production, or a closely related field
-
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Crop Science/ Agronomy/Plant Production, or a closely related field
-
Five (5) Ordinary Level Passes including English Language, Science and Mathematics
-
At least two (2) years hands-on crop farming experience at a commercial farming entity, preferably in a leadership role
