Description
Gwanda State University invites applications from suitably qualified, experienced, and highly motivated individuals for the position of Animal Specialist at the University’s Agro Innovation and Industrial Park. The Agro Innovation and Industrial Park is a strategic platform for teaching, research, innovation, industrialisation, and commercial agricultural production in line with Education 5.0. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership in livestock production systems while supporting research, commercialization, and community engagement initiatives
Responsibilities
As a ANIMAL SPECIALIST, you will be

Planning, coordinating, and managing livestock production enterprises at the Agro Innovation and Industrial Park (eg beef, small ruminants, poultry, or other relevant enterprises)

Reviewing current livestock production systems and recommending improvements
-
Overseeing the day-to-day management and care of all livestock
-
Monitoring livestock health, and implementation of a preventive health strategy
-
Planning for labour requirements and participating in the recruiting and training of staff
-
Supervising workers undertaking various activities in the Livestock Unit
-
Overseeing herd/flock health management, feeding programmes, breeding schedules, and biosecurity protocols
-
Maintaining livestock production, health management and welfare records
-
Preparing livestock activity reports, such as production, sales, purchases, feeding, health and welfare
-
Arranging for sale of livestock in collaboration with the Business Development Manager
-
Supporting value addition, product development, and commercialization of livestock-based products
-
Facilitating the purchase of inputs such as feed, sanitation chemicals and medicines in collaboration with the Procurement Management Unit
-
Inspecting machinery, equipment and facilities to establish maintenance and repair requirements
-
Ensuring that the Livestock Production Unit complies with all relevant statutory regulations
-
Keeping abreast with developments and trends in Livestock Production Science
-
Facilitating farmer training, extension services, and technology transfer to surrounding communities
-
Promoting innovation and commercialization of crop-based technologies and products
-
Supervising students on industrial attachment, work-related learning, and research projects conducted at the Agro Innovation and Industrial Park
-
Preparing technical reports, production budgets, and performance evaluations, and undertaking any other related duties as assigned by the Director Research, Innovation and Industrialisation

Conduct research trials on improved breeds, feeding systems, and livestock technologies
-
Promote climate-resilient and sustainable livestock production systems, and test innovative approaches such as precision livestock farming and alternative feed resources
Qualification
-
A Master’s Degree in Animal Science/ Livestock Production/ Animal Nutrition/ Animal Breeding, or a closely related field
-
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Animal Science/ Livestock Production/ Animal Nutrition/ Animal Breeding, or a closely related field, from a recognised Institution
-
Five (5) Ordinary Level Passes including English Language, Science and Mathematics
-
At least two (2) years hands-on livestock farming experience preferably in a leadership role
